1) Find a business owner and talk to them about their customers. Who do they think their target customers are? What are their customers' unmet needs? Where do they find their customers? What are their customer's demographics? What kinds of media do their customers consume? Etc.
For this assignment, I interviewed Nam Diep of Lollicup. Lollicup is a boba tea cafe business located on 34th street near the Kangaroo. They have various flavors of tea and is a prominent study location. Nam said that his target customers are those who like to drink boba tea, find a place to hangout and socialize, and study. For awhile, Lollicup was the one of the few businesses dedicated to selling boba tea in Gainesville. He relies on two major forms to find his target market. He advertises in coupon books and sponsors many local events. However, one major way he finds most of new customers from, which he doesn't have direct control of is word-of-mouth. He finds that mostly college students, Asian American, and travel in groups for his main demographics. He also finds that his demographics frequent Facebook and Instagram.
2) Next, go and talk to 3 'target customers' -- using the demographics/psychographics the entrepreneur described. Ask these 'target customers' the questions in the paragraph directly above.
3) Reflect. Does the entrepreneur adequately understand their customers' problems? Where are the differences? Why might these differences exist.
I felt that Nam's analysis of his 20% is spot on. Knowing that he has been a business owner for over a decade, sticking to his tried and true formula, he has narrowed down where his sweet spot is. Nam is a true entrepreneur, he truly engages his customers and make a relationship with them. He is an ardent supporter of local events be believes in giving back to the community. I wish him much success in the future when we have small business owners like him being the backbone to successful communities.

Kevin,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great business concept. I wish there were more places for students to socialize which studying. Starbucks get packed and loud. Plus, hardly consisting of students. Imagine if this owner could franchise and expand? While it's clear he's successful, coupon books seem outdated to bring in new business.
Based on your customer interviews and the owner's feedback, it seems like he's right on target with his customer base's needs. My only concern would be growing business outside of a specified demographic.
I wish there were something like this around me! Great job on this assignment.
I hadn't heard of Lollipop before seeing your post but it seems like a really interesting and unique business idea. I think the amount of specific businesses around Gainesville like this one is really cool! Based on your posted it seems like Nam is really in tune with his customers and their specific needs. It is always interesting to hear about small business owners in Gainesville that are successful. Your analysis and interviews were very thorough and gives the reader a lot of important information about Lollipop. I think it would become even more popular if more UF students knew about it.
ReplyDeleteHi Kevin!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your Twenty Percent post and blog, I really enjoyed reading it.I had never heard of Lollicup, but after reading your assignment it seems like a unique and great establishment. Hi Kevin,
ReplyDeleteI have heard of Lollicup many times and after watching your videos it has intrigued me even more. I am glad that this is such a student-friendly place and that it is targeting boba tea lovers specifically. I appreciate the fact that you went out and found a small business owner instead of a franchise owner, it is not the same as far as being genuine goes. Great post!
Hi Kevin,
ReplyDeleteI don't live in the Gainesville area so I am not sure how many coffee/tea shops compete for business there. I believe Mr. Diep has an excellent grasp of his demographic but maybe could do more to reach out via social media. You can never discount word of mouth but it may take more to get new faces in the door. I wonder if there is a way (or even a desire) to bring boba tea more into the mainstream. Hi Kevin,
ReplyDeleteI LOVE tea. Not so much boba tea, however that is pretty big in my area, -- the bay area. I like how you did this completely differently and didn't find any old Starbucks, you went and interviewed a business owner of a unique business. You did a great job of marketing the shop that I kind of want to go get boba tea now! Thanks much for the share, I enjoyed your post.

This business idea was such a nice find. The business offers a service that is unique. The one problem is that the demographic is very specialized. The problem with expanding the demographic might be that the specialized demographic will lose interest. It might make it better if there is more incentive for the students to promote the tea. Most specialty services do want to remain just that, a specialty. I enjoyed your work and look forward to future posts.
ReplyDeleteKevin!
ReplyDeleteYour idea was very different but I thought you did a really good job! I think you got a great feedback and I agree that the owner was spot on! You clearly put a lot of effort into this assignment. I unfortunately did not complete this assignment so I cannot provide a link to my own page.
Kevin,
ReplyDeleteGreat post. Thought this was a perfect business to pick for this assignment as it truly takes a good understanding of the target market to even survive in this industry. Personally, I don't even know what boba tea is so it is important for this business to target not only the people who do know what it is, but also get the word out to those who don't. Overall I think Nam had a solid understanding of his target market and appears to be implementing the knowledge successfully. I came to a similar conclusion on the business that I selected.
